The sheets are cool against his skin. The sun is streaming through the gossamer curtains in their room. If this is heaven, let him never go back. Hitler is dead, now let the men live like Kings. They’ve earned it. He feels the body next to him shift.

“You’re thinking too loud.”

“Sorry Lew.”

“What were you thinking?”

“That we earned this after the hell we’ve been through.”

“Couldn’t agree more."

Lewis kisses his shoulder and wraps a strong arm around his waist.

Closing his eyes, he sinks back into the softness of the mattress and drifts off to sleep.

Hmmm *hums contently* this is nice. It reminds me of a piece of poetry I found when I was in a different fandom (they stole the title off it - it's not the entire poem - "The Anniversary" by John Donne - and I never read it completely but the excerpt is lovely).

And then we shall be thoroughly blest,
But we no more than all the rest;
Here upon earth, we're kings, and none but we
Can be such kings, nor of such subjects be;
Who is so safe as we, where none can do
Treason to us, except one of us two?
True and false fears let us refrain,
Let us love nobly, and live, and add again
Years and years unto years, till we attain
To write threescore; this is the second of our reign.
